"Sovereign of the Seas" Part IV - Carvings, Beakhead Details, Rails and Gun Carriages

Festoon carvings B are glued just below the second wale, extending the entire length of the wale and conforming to its curve. The same design is used for panels B on the sternboard. The gunports under the quarter galleries on each side, and also decorate the lower panels of the sternboard. Carvings D decorate the sternboard and quarter-gallery panels so marked. The main-sternboard carving C is fitted to the largest upper panel of the sternboard, while the remainder of the smaller carvings are located as shown. The relief wood curves, columns, etc., was sawed and routed out, can be left plain, or slightly rounded with a knife and sandpaper to simulate additional carved units. You will find that common pins, pressed in at an angle above and below the carved piece, will hold it tightly against the hull or sternboard, while the glue dries.
